THE WORD OF ELOHIM

GENESIS

Chapter 48

Final Paragraph:

Then Yisrael said to Yehoseph, “I am about to die; but Elohim will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.  And now, I assign to you one portion more than to your brothers, which I wrested from the Emori with my sword and bow.”

In Genesis chapter 34 it was written:

On the third day, when they were in pain; Simeon and Levi, two of Ya’akov’s sons, brothers of Dinah; took each his sword, came upon the city unmolested, and slew all the males.  They put Chamor and his son Shekem to the sword, and took Dinah out of Shekem’s house, and went away.  The other sons of Ya’akov came upon the slain and plundered the town, because their sister had been defiled.  They seized their flocks and herds and asses, all that was inside the town and outside, all that was in the houses, they took as captives and booty.

Ya’akov said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me, making me odious among the inhabitants of the land, the Kna'aniy and the Perizzi; my men are few in number, so that if they unite against me and attack me, I and my house will be destroyed.”  But they answered, “Should our sister be treated like a whore?”

Then in Genesis chapter 35 it is written:

Elohim said to Ya’akov, “Arise, go up to Bayt el and remain there, and build an altar there to Elohim; who appeared to you, when you were fleeing from your brother Esav.”  So Ya’akov said to his household and to all who were with him, “Rid yourselves of the alien gods in your midst, purify yourselves, and change your clothes.  Come, let us go up to Bayt el, and I will build an altar there to Elohim; who answered me when I was in distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.”  They gave to Ya’akov all the alien gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears, and Ya’akov buried them under the terebinth that was near Shekem.  As they set out, a terror from Elohim fell on the cities round about, so that they did not pursue the sons of Ya’akov.

The events that took place frightened Ya’akov and he was afraid for his life and his household.  But Elohim was with Ya’akov.  Ya’akov was a man filled with strength and Elohim blessed his son’s likewise.  Driven by this fear they fought the people of the land and the people were driven away in fear of them.   In the final paragraph of chapter 48, this is what Ya’akov is referring too.
