THE WORD OF ELOHIM
GENESIS
Chapter 4
Now the man knew his wife Chavah and she conceived and bore Kain, saying, "I have gained a male child with the help of Yehovah." She then bore his brother Hebel. Hebel became a keeper of sheep, and Kain became a tiller of the soil. In the course of time, Kain brought an offering to Yehovah, from the fruit of the soil and Hebel; for his part, brought the choicest of the firstlings, of his flock. Yehovah paid heed to Hebel and his offering; but to Kain and his offering, He paid no heed. Kain was much distressed and his face fell. And Yehovah said to Kain, "Why are you distressed and why has your face fallen? Surely, if you do right, there is uplift; but if you do not do right, sin couches at the door. It's urge is toward you, yet you can be its master."
Kain said to his brother Hebel... and when they were in the field, Kain set upon his brother Hebel and killed him. Yehovah said to Kain, "Where is your brother Hebel?" And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" Then He said, "What have you done? Hark, your brother's blood cries out to Me, from the ground! Therefore, you shall be more cursed than the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. If you till the soil, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. You shall become a ceaseless wanderer on earth."
Kain said to Yehovah, "My punishment is too great to bear! Since You have banished me this day from the soil, and I must avoid Your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth―anyone who meets me may kill me!" Yehovah said to him, "I promise, if anyone kills Kain, sevenfold vengeance shall be taken on him." And Yehovah put a mark on Kain, lest anyone who met him should kill him. Kain left the presence of Yehovah and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Kain knew his wife and she conceived and bore Chanoch. And he then founded a city and named the city after his son Chanoch. To Chanoch was born Irad and Irad begot Mechuyael and Mechuyael begot Metushael and Metushael begot Lemek. Lemek took to himself two wives; the name of the one was Adah and the name of the other was Tsillah. Adah bore Yabal; he was the ancestor of those who dwell in tents and amidst herds. And the name of his brother was Yubal; he was the ancestor of all who play the lyre and the pipe. As for Tsillah, she bore Tubal-
Adam knew his wife again and she bore a son and named him Shet, meaning, "Elohim has provided me with another offspring, in place of Hebel," for Kain had killed him. And to Shet, in turn, a son was born, and he named him Enosh. It was then that men began to invoke Yehovah by name.
